It's built on top of Bitcoin though. With this argument one could argue that Lightning isn't bitcoin either.

Lightning - Bitcoin is first locked into a payment channel on the main Bitcoin blockchain. Once the channel is open, users can conduct an unlimited number of transactions off-chain within that channel. Cashu - Utility tokens that are redeemable for Bitcoin. They are an IOU or digital cash equivalent secured by a trusted (or federated) mint, which is a key difference from holding the Bitcoin itself in your non-custodial wallet. This introduces an element of custody and trust in the mint operator that is not present in running a node.

Gotta disagree with you there Derek. Or make a clarifying statement. If it’s lightning and on my personal node it’s settled. Cashu in a mint isn’t settled and can be rugged and used as a fractional reserve. We can potentially say that a custodial Lightning payment or holding is similar. But that’s still bitcoin. Cashu is a ledger. And the mint just “says” it has X number of sats.

Yep. And the mint can rug and use fractional reserves at will.

I don't think it's generally a big deal. The government wanted encrypted communication too and we know they use it 🤣 after the war chat mistakes. We also use SELinux every single day and that was developed by the NSA. We also use SHA-256 every single day and as Bitcoiners we essentially worship it, yet it was again developed by the NSA. Well, I believe most nostr and bitcoin-users of @Signal are still unaware about @Signal’s funding from the CIA and NSA, @Derek Ross, @npub1vt77...5vdp. I think it’s a problem that many Signal-users are unaware of the trade-off’s they’re making with their ‘private’ ‘E2E-encrypted messages’ in Signal. Signal is in a bit of a trust me bro situation, as with most end to end encrypted messaging applications where you don't own the signing keys. White Noise fixes this, but has a long road ahead of itself to where it's usable in the real world and by the masses. They're working hard and I'm confident they'll get it right. I assume your outage issues this morning is because Signal uses AWS, like 1/3 of the Internet, and it seems like many popular services and applications are struggling today.
