DNS is currently nostr's lynchpin, by implementation rather than design. It's made worse by representing relays as URLls that are really just fuzzy strings that are practically impossible to validate or deduplicate.

Yes, that, and the big relays which are good for efficiency but create more centralization and attack vector for bad actors. And (small) local private relays on decentralized network can be good addition to the current Nostr stack.
