The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reports that about 60% of state prisoners are serving time for violent offenses. • In 2022, there were around 1.2 million people in state and federal prisons. • That means about 700,000–750,000 people are imprisoned for violent crimes. • As a share of the total U.S. population, that’s roughly 0.2%.
