Google’s New Dictation Can Clean Up Your Speech—But Can You Trust the Rewrite? Google wants voice typing to sound less like a rough draft and more like a finished thought. But its newest transcription model also raises an uncomfortable question: when AI smooths over what you said, does the final text still belong entirely to you?

Google unveiled Gemini 3.5 Transcribe as a speech-to-text upgrade built to understand speech and intent across multiple speakers, recognize more than 85 languages and adapt to specialized vocabulary. “Say hello to Gemini 3.5 Transcribe!” CEO Sundar Pichai wrote, pitching an API for developers alongside the model’s broader product rollout.

The model is already powering Rambler, Gboard’s dictation feature on Pixel 11, and is arriving in the Gemini app for macOS, AI Studio, Antigravity and the Gemini API. Google says Chrome support is coming soon. Compared with Chirp 3, the company says the new system is about 70% faster from speech to finished transcription, while its live-speech error rate falls from 7.32% to 5.5%.

Its defining feature is not merely transcription, however. Gemini 3.5 Transcribe can strip out “ums” and “uhs,” format text, incorporate custom jargon and revise a sentence as a speaker corrects themselves. That could make spoken emails and prompts far less painful to produce. It also means the model is making editorial choices in real time: useful for casual dictation, potentially problematic where an exact record matters.

Google calls the release “a major advancement from our previous transcription model, Chirp 3,” particularly in multilingual performance and word error rates. Yet the rollout has already had one confusing wrinkle. After initially supplying information about Gemini 3.5 Live and 3.5 Live Experimental updates, Google told The Verge those models were not launching and offered no replacement date.

For now, Transcribe is the product actually arriving. Its promise is cleaner speech; its test will be whether users can tell the difference between a helpful polish and an AI-authored paraphrase.
