Struggle of Empires
Old-school Martin Wallace.
Everyone bids for alliances at the start of each phase - which varies the game flow cleverly. Also, the top VP position in each area is shared so there's little incentive for spite.
I like few 5 hour games, but it's so well done that it doesn't bother me.
The rules are a bit fiddly in places but I think it was cleaned up in later editions.
