There is truth but we cannot observe it. We can only know our version of the truth.
This was known to philosophers as early as Plato and refined by Kant.

There are reasons behind why they believe in their version of the truth. If it's slightly better than the current reality then they will get people to a better place.
The problem is that we're such imperfect beings that our versions of the truth are pale replica of actual truth... so it's much better to just let me Universe drive instead of scheming and plotting.
