It seems to me that Microsoft would've liked to stop making Xbox a long time ago, but the problem is that they're the only American company in the console market, and such a move would hurt the image not only of Microsoft, but of the U.S. as well.

Makes sense!
I think they wanted to call it quits after the Xbox One disaster, but then they tried to pivot to a subscription model instead. That seems to be Microsoft under Nadella - if its not a subscription, its done.
Yeah, they're also killing native desktop apps and forcing you to use all of the 365 stuff, that they can more easily charge for.
