The purpose of the trial is to make an example out of someone and intimate everyone else by showing openly that they can destroy anyone's life at any time for any reason. See Soviet show trials. The reason for the intimidation is because they're a weak and pathetic minority, and if a significant number of people pushed back they'd be finished in no time. So they have to make sure that never happens.
