Hope is a very effective prison, it is why Sun Tzu said to leave the enemy an escape route, if you remove the escape route like the allies did to their own troops by removing the boats, the only option is to fight hard. The reason we haven't had a civil war or revolution in quite a while is they keep giving people false hope that it won't get much worse, that it will stop at some point short of hell, it won't but people keep hoping so they won't do what is necessary.
