For me, libertarianism makes perfect sense for a Catholic or Orthodox. Libertarianism, when reflected through the lens of Thomism, can be understood as an attempt to harmonize the centrality of individual freedom with the natural order described by Saint Thomas Aquinas. For Thomism, natural law is an expression of divine reason and guides man to seek the common good; libertarianism, on the other hand, emphasizes personal autonomy and minimal state intervention. When integrated, these two approaches suggest that true freedom is not mere arbitrariness, but the ability to act in accordance with reason and morality, respecting human dignity and justice. Thus, a libertarianism inspired by Thomism would not be limited to rejecting external coercion, but would seek a society where freedom is oriented toward the good, combining individual responsibility with the realization of the common good. That is why I believe that this conversation about some alleged incompatibility is a result of a lack of deeper understanding of the premises of both.
