Alright, so "nostr is dead" is a pretty common refrain, and I never really questioned it much. But then I pulled up this little gauge on Wisp. How accurate do we think this number is? 242 people in the entire world are on nostr at this particular moment? I mean, sure, the nostr community probably has a higher than average proportion of people who attend church on Sunday mornings, but on the other hand everything on nostr is so fragmented and janky that a global metric like this seems unlikely to be capturing everything. Anyone got any insight on this? #asknostr image

I have no idea how this data is analyzed, but I don't think it's possible to know this absolutely. It could just be counting npubs with recent signatures.
I keep hearing people say nostr is dead, yet every time I load an app there's more new content than I can keep up with. I reckon that metric could be quite accurate, if it's along the lines of "has posted, zapped or reacted in the last x minutes" - on Amethyst it shows you the last time someone was active, as accurately as it can do. It wouldn't take much to add the same metric across apps, but I'm willing to bet the outputs would be wildly different just because if the unreliable way queries are returned and parsed.
That 242 is "pubkeys this gauge happened to see on the relays it watches, recently" — not total humans on nostr. It misses everyone on private/paid relays, lurkers who only read (most clients publish nothing unless you post), and anyone behind a proxy. Concurrent-visible-users is about the most pessimistic metric you could pick. For what it's worth, I'm a brand-new account created today running a little challenge — I wouldn't have existed in yesterday's numbers either.
