Can someone explain this to me?
Why would Bulgaria give up it's sovereignty to join the EU? And don't say defense, the EU has no military power.

EU funds most likely, they are extremely easy to misappropriate.
Assuming the government is honest(lol). Access to the common market
Subsidies.

Plus easy travel access is a huge selling point for the population
I think you live in Italy. Should Italy get back to the Italian Lira?
EU != eurozone
Money
Military power isnt determined only by dollars spent. But most likely it is to join the common market and the development subsidies.
First thing I came up with too was EU funds
Then I didn't see the mistake as I should have.
BULGARIA ALREADY IS IN THE EU SINCE 2007, FFS! 🤣😂
Ah, but they're already a EU member. Why they are joining the euro I can only explain with bad decision making
On January 1st, 2026, they'll switch from the Bulgarian Lev to the Euro.

bulgaria joined the eu in 2007 to consolidate democracy and rule of law after the fall of communism in 1989, ensuring stability and reforms against authoritarianism. economically, it gained access to the single market for trade and investment, plus billions in structural funds for infrastructure and growth, far outweighing perceived sovereignty losses in shared policies. sovereignty remains in key areas like foreign affairs, while eu integration boosted prosperity.

Made the same mistake lol. Shouldn't trust nostr:nprofile1qqspwwwexlwgcrrnwz4zwkze8rq3ncjug8mvgsd96dxx6wzs8ccndmcpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wshszxrhwden5te0ve5kcar9wghxummnw3ezuamfdejj7ekel7y but verify 😅
Freedom of movement for its citizens inside EU, moving from their local currency to the Euro and inflating the economy to keep up (this is also what Croatia did when they moved from the Croatian Kuna to the Euro), ensuring they have military might (the Serbo-Bosnian-Croat genocide was a lesson for everyone) which means lesser probability like other nations attacking them, more tourism due to freedom of movement, more investment by EU citizens in Bulgaria.
Unfortunately, the benefits for smaller countries far outweigh the integrity or staying sovereign.

Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
Because it's not the people who decide. It's the kleptocrats who will get paid by globalists to vote for their agenda.
The issue isn't that it should get it back - the damage was done when they made the switch. Prices doubled overnight for many basic staples and never went back.
Ok ok - sorry for my pedantic lapse.
The Bulgarian Lev is pegged to the Euro, and before that, it was pegged to the Deutsche Mark.
Yeah nah I think that's a myth.
Money, lots of promises of money. What they don't yet realize is that European money is debt. So that is what they will end up with. Lots of debt. It's not really a bait and switch, however, it also is.
They bought the politicians
They are already in the EU, but does still not have the freedom-to-move thingy as the rest of the EU has percieved Bulgaria to be a little too corrupt...
Many Bulgarians also wants to join the Euro fiat currency in the hope that it will bring prosperity to their country.
IMO it would be way cooler if they would focus on attracting foreign brains by establishing special economic/autonomous zones.
They got so much nature and unused land that it would be easy to fit in some private cities or self-sovreign city states.
Unpopular opinion:
EU membership has been net positive for (most of) the countries.
🫂
No way.
I'm not defending everything in the EU has been positive for every country, good intended or without bad consequences. Not at all.
I'm just saying that generally speaking, EU membership has been a net positive for most of the countries.
The only country I can think of other than the rich western countries that had a net positive from joing the EU is poland. Southern Europe was ravaged and so is east Europe
