I think a lot of people on the left took on the label of woke. Especially after that childish gambino song. In an effort to be a part of a group.
At least that’s how I remember it happening in 2016 era political landscape.
How this nomenclature has remained relevant for this long is a mystery to me. And yeah sure you could say it’s been around since the 70s (maybe even before) but I think it’s gone through multiple changes in core meaning.
Either way. I think you’re correct in saying the group won’t be clearly defined. But one clearly aims to be a group and the other is being told they’re a group by outsiders.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to identity and the desire for moral superiority. Wokism is just one variation of this phenomenon. Some people use it as a means to belong to a group, while others use it to separate themselves from a group. In general, I agree. It has probably always existed and will continue to do so.
