This hypothesis hinges on whether the president (or more?) of Ukraine is a puppet dictator. Is he/he the office been that, to the US? Also, Ukraine NATO membership hasn't been on the table until after the hostilities started in 2022. So it's difficult for me to see where you wish to reasonably go with this analogy.
