and they're sufficient to do all that you've described? if so, why is everyone going on about Mac minis and studios and other powerful pieces of hardware?

You can run Clawd on a very basic setup if using an AI API. If you want to run self hosted then you need to up the hardware accordingly.
So with Claude Sonnet 4.6 I'm struggling a lot but making progress developing software. Open models are just no match yet regardless how powerful the machine.
