So i have node decision to make
Im going to spin up a node again to run knots science my last node stoped working
I have lying a rpi5 that previously have umbrel installed but started having issues and after reboot, the os stopped working and the sd got some issue also
So im thinking of:
-Buying an umbrel home to save time(i dont like the hardware is not fully open source)
-Installing again umbrel on the pi5
-Installing startOS on the pi5 or on a mini pc
Apraciatte any help from an experienced #noderunner

I’ve had great success with a beelink ser5
Thanks, i will check it out
Wich node OS did you install on it?
Start9
One of my nodes is a mini PC and I would recommend that also. nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll recommends not using Pi 4. Not sure if they are steering away from the 5.
Cool, why did you choose start9 over umbrel?
Nice that sound like a solid option. Thanks🤙
I watched a few interviews with Matt Hill.

I recently bought a 2TB Umbrel home and set up my bitcoin node and lightning node on it. I don't have a lot of tech experience but by following some youtube videos setup was a breeze. Its been fun, its working well and I'm learning a lot.
The question wasn’t directed toward me, but here goes.
I started with Umbrel and still use them for “metube, pi hole, nostr relay, syncthing…. Of course bitcoin Knots and Datum.”
My umbrel on Pi 4 crashed so many times that I didn’t want that to keep affecting my lightning node. When I am not running a lightning node it seems that Umbrel is super solid. (Granted I did not run umbrel on a mini pc.)
Start 9 on the other hand has:
~https so you can connect to it securely from anywhere. ~The documentation is easy to follow and makes sense once you dig into what is actually going on.
~You can see the logs on each service to diagnose problems. (Umbrel has implemented this also now.)
~There is a setting to add or delete connections over ssh and or connect to different computers.
~They have root certificate authority so you can add specific computers and or devices to connect to your node. If the device doesn’t have the rca then it can’t connect to your node. (Security matters!)
~To backup the apps on the node is super easy to do.
and much much more that I can’t think of right now. In my opinion it is the perfect option for serious lightning nodes.
That isn’t to take away from Umbrel because I do run knots and datum on umbrel.
I use Umbrel a lot. I will also use Umbrel exclusively to solo mine on Ocean with Knots and Datum when I pick up a Avalon nano 3s.
I just think that nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll has thought of everything and is the best right now.

Thanks for your take on this, very good info🤙
I will take that option into consideration. Thanks for replying🤙
Anytime man. Let us know how it goes.
If you can, never use a sd to run bitcoin, not even think about running a LN node. Could you sell that pi5 and bought a normal NUC or used laptop?
Sure🤙
Yeah i coukd sell the pi but i already have some hardware for the node that works with the pi. But i think im going to use that pi5 with umbrel/startOS in an usb drive and a 2TB ssd i already have. By the moment im only planning on running knots on it
