🚨Trump has signed an order initiating the process to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.
“By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101 et seq.) (INA), and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.) (IEEPA), it is hereby ordered:
Section 1. Purpose.
This order begins the process of considering certain chapters or subdivisions of the Muslim Brotherhood for designation as Foreign Terrorist Organizations under section 219 of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1189), and as Specially Designated Global Terrorists under IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702) and Executive Order 13224 (Blocking Property and Prohibiting Transactions with Persons Who Commit, Threaten to Commit, or Support Terrorism).
Founded in Egypt in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has grown into a transnational network with branches across the Middle East and beyond. Its chapters in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt have engaged in or supported violent and destabilizing activities that threaten U.S. citizens, interests, and regional partners. After the October 7, 2023, attack in Israel, the Lebanese chapter’s military wing joined Hamas, Hezbollah, and other Palestinian factions in launching rocket attacks on civilian and military targets in Israel. A senior Egyptian Brotherhood leader called for violence against U.S. partners, and Jordanian Brotherhood leaders have long provided material support to Hamas’s militant wing. These actions directly endanger American civilians and undermine regional stability.
Section 2. Policy.
The United States will work with regional partners to dismantle the capabilities and operations of Muslim Brotherhood chapters designated under this order, cut off their resources, and eliminate any threats they pose to U.S. nationals and national security.
Section 3. Implementation.
(a) Within 30 days, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury—after consulting the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence—must submit a joint report to the President recommending which Muslim Brotherhood chapters or subdivisions, including those in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt, should be designated as foreign terrorist organizations and/or Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
(b) Within 45 days of submitting this report, the Secretary of State or the Secretary of the Treasury must take all appropriate action, consistent with applicable laws and Executive Order 13224, to designate the identified chapters or subdivisions.
Section 4. General Provisions.
(a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to:
(i) alter the legal authority of any executive department or agency; or
(ii) affect the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
(b) This order will be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to available appropriations.
