You can't compare jail and fine, at all. Jail is always worse than fines. Plus you're acting like defamation ain't a crime everywhere.
You can say basically anything in america and its not a crime. In the uk that's not even close to the case. A civil judgment requires someone to sue you, criminal is you vs the govt

So what you're saying is that $1'500'000'000 fine Jones got is better than suspended sentence this guy got, and because of that "in America you can say basically anything"? Makes perfect sense...
By the way, suspended sentence means he did not go to jail. And yes, he was sued by "someone" - that was the public prosecutor.
