Shocking that devs are realizing that trying to make profit from a free to use network doesn’t really work…
When you work on freedom tech you shouldn’t be expecting money in return…
Doing it for the betterment for all is the way to go…

ideally clients could be profitable so they could hire marketing people, etc to continue to grow the network. it's not about "doing it for profit" for profit sake. the profit allows you to continue to work on it and to hire marketing people to grow it.
Naw man you shouldn’t even think that stuff like this can be profitable…
It should be a money sink…
The only thing that should matter is the betterment for all to use freedom technology.
If it is profitable then its future is assured.
If not, not.
The Sony PlayStation 2 became the best-selling console of all time, yet Sony initially lost massive amounts of money on every single unit sold because the cutting-edge hardware was way too expensive to manufacture for its retail price.
people will benefit if you can actually work on it …
Sustainable.
The real problem is that for decades people got used to being the product being sold (to the advertisers) without even knowing it. They call it free…
V4V does not scale or sustain anything, Sumerians understood this thousands of years ago and began writing, striking deals and signing contracts.
I tried to look at content as the honey pot that would fuel clients, relays and more. Got told V4V or nothing!
I tried to look at relay subscriptions to fuel content, give back to the community via dev grants and so on. Got told too expensive, too cheap, why should I give forward, V4V or nothing!
Developing and maintaining an ecosystem set to compete with centralized giants requires an army of full time people.
The strength of Bitcoin is not cryptography, it’s game theory. Nostr has none.
They invested with intent to make a profit in the future.
Sony's net profit margin is about 8% and PlayStation about 10%.
Try paying rent with freedom.
I’ve done that before
I get what you’re saying Will, damus is my go to client and I truly appreciate everything you have done for nostr…
Just showing the balance. Just because something is profitable doesn’t mean it’s
future is secured
I'd say if money is your only motive for doing it then your likely doing it for the wrong reason and it will show in the work accomplished.
Never rent or borrow.
Nothing is free, if someone else built something you use for free it just means they paid for it.
And Playstation was profitable and so it's future was assured. Rod explained that, and you even agree because you were forced to qualify your first statement with "initially".
Not for profit could achieve similar outcomes no? Ie. Pay you and others without pure profit motive. For profit isn’t bad either but another take.
Of course I agree with the statement. I’m just saying that just becuase it’s not profitable at first doesn’t mean developer should give up designing beautiful apps
