Statement by President George W. Bush on the Passing of Former Vice President Dick Cheney
The death of Richard B. Cheney is a great loss for our nation and a deep sorrow for his friends. Laura and I will remember Dick as a man of decency, honor, and conviction. History will remember him as one of the finest public servants of his generation — a patriot who brought integrity, intelligence, and an unwavering sense of duty to every role he held.
From his early days as a White House aide and Chief of Staff, to his service as a Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and ultimately as my Vice President, Dick earned the confidence and respect of five presidents. I first asked him to help me find a running mate in 2000, but through those conversations — about experience, judgment, character, and loyalty — I came to realize that Dick Cheney was the person I needed by my side. I remain profoundly grateful that he accepted and served with me for the next eight years.
In the White House, Dick was a calm, steady presence during some of our nation’s most difficult moments. I relied on his honest and forthright counsel, and he always gave his best. He stood firm in his beliefs and dedicated himself to protecting the freedom and security of the American people. Throughout his extraordinary career, Dick Cheney’s service brought great credit to the country he loved so deeply.
Dick’s devotion to America was matched only by his love for his family. Laura and I have shared our heartfelt condolences with Lynne, Liz, Mary, and the entire Cheney family, of whom he was so proud. We are praying for them as they honor a great man and an even greater American.
