#Hola Today I remembered one of those nerdy things that might interest and appeal to a particular group of people.
Have you ever heard of the “Mad Arab” Abdul Alhazred?
He’s one of many devoured by his own creation. If the author’s name doesn’t ring a bell, the title of his work probably will: The Necronomicon. That forbidden, hunted book of which only a few copies are said to remain. It is said to drive anyone who dares read it insane, because it contains dark and ancient knowledge, long forgotten—knowledge that humans are not meant to possess. Some say a few surviving copies can be found in the Widener Library at Harvard University; the National Library of Paris; Miskatonic University; and the University of Buenos Aires (the last of which was later moved to the Mariano Moreno National Library).
If you dig into your memory, you’ll probably recall some story, movie, or video game where it’s mentioned as one of the most dangerous objects. A lot is said about it, but broadly speaking, anyone could list some of the topics it supposedly contains... BUT—because no good story would be complete without a big, capital-letter BUT—it doesn’t exist.
Despite what many believe, Abdul Alhazred never existed. He was a name—or pseudonym—made up by a young H. P. Lovecraft. “Alhazred” is a play on the phonetics of “all has read,” and the full name, if you speak Arabic, likely contains many errors. However, to non-speakers, it just sounds Arabic or like something from the Middle East.
It’s said that even though Borges wasn’t a big fan of Lovecraft’s work, when he was director of the National Library, he had an entry card filed for a wooden-covered book, translated into Latin from Arabic, titled Necronomicon, written by Abdul Alhazred—a copy which is never available.
Who knows if, in this decentralized network around the world, full of users from a virtual universe who gather and share knowledge, a PDF or link might one day appear to a strange text that surfaced from the depths of the minds of all of us who ever heard its name...
