To be clear, xrp also uses fees to combat spam @ hodlbod @calle and has demonstrated it quite masterfully in the past I might add
Again not an endorsement of permissioned systems
Xrp was not intended to be bitcoin. Ever. That was made v clear from the outset.

Do you have receipts? There is a lot of history that predates me, but more an more people I care about are getting the XRP brain virus and I need materiel
Actually, I might… I’d have to dig them up but there was a massive spam problem right before we hit the hooks problem which is what Bitcoin is facing right now… spam 👉🏼 anchors
Hooks were our “anchors” and it had a ton of community support (myself included) … because we obviously wanted a proxy smart contract type deal on xrpl for “side chain development” etc
And we got hooks, it was like a huge social media movement
xrp community at the time very much so operated like you would expect a lightly decentralized protocol to operate (kinda nostr like tbh) which was cool because it made development fast and hardcore and then those turned into “side chains” of sorts which are independently run by the lead devs who independenty/distributed run most of the dUNL nodes
Ie, weitse created xahau
There’s A LOT of nuance to this conversation though as xrp doesn’t find blocks, it validates each tx independently (unlike blocks which are big blocks of transactions)
Xrpl/rippled had to actually raise the fee mechanism during the spam problem and it was discovered that xrpl had this super cool niche dynamic fee thing going on which caused the ledger to halt (this is considered a feature for they protocol not a bug)
Also to be open and honest, I very much so respect xrpl devs… they are hardcore hardcore cypherpunks some of them
