As for 'avoiding pain', I don't think that is mentioned in Castaneda's writings. At one point don Juan tells Carlos that 'pain and hunger are just thoughts, they are just thoughts for me now. I have accomplished that.' In that passage he is referencing turning off the internal dialogue or our ability to stop talking to ourselves.
