whatever it means to him, you can tell he isnt there and worse, feels derisively about his past self who wrote it. there is a part where you can tell he is mocking himself, can't even access his own past participation mystique, he is that moved on. it is really sad and disrespectful to the audience.
this is where, as a musician, you gotta say no
even if the audience is chanting for a tune, even if it is a fan favorite, if the best you can do is ~this? dont play it. as the artist, and the writer, you know better than your audience what you are capable of, and what you just are not, anymore. whether that was a happy loss or a sad one, he is someone else now. no longer has access to this song. as in: only a cover band can play this now with any authenticity.
