Is there something else that I have to do first?
Like, do I have to go somewhere and download a set of emojis or something?

If you’ve added emoji packs in other clients before, then in theory those emojis should show up when you type : . That said, there might be a bug here, I occasionally run into cases where the emoji list doesn’t appear either.
If you haven’t added any emoji packs yet, you can add some under settings → emoji packs
