To be fair though, I think what the media is saying is that many on the right have identified this song as being their anthem. Similar to how trump played a lot of ‘anthem’ songs during his rallies (despite the artists themselves not aligning with him, in fact several sent him cease and desists)

Sometimes people don't actually listen to the lyrics and get tricked by an catchy, ironic chorus, for example "Born in the USA" and "I Love L.A." (cf. Reagan and the Dodgers.) Speaking of Newman, I almost choked on my spliff the day I heard "Sail Away", his anthemic skewering of Southern slavery apologists, unironically being employed to sell Beck's Beer. I guess the ad agency didn't listen too closely when they picked it ("Was für eine wunderschöne Melodie, nicht wahr, Dieter?"), and Randy was like, "Sure, I'll take your money, whatever", that is, if he even got compensated for that travesty.
