They don't want to do anything but maintain the reference implementation of Bitcoin. Stop attributing malicious intent to core developers. Make the argument that it will harm Bitcoin. Stop saying "Core bad" because they made a change you don't fully understand.

There are thousands of OP_RETURNS more than 80 bytes on the blockchain now and before this change. Wtf are you talking about.
