I spent way too long learning the exact differences between cage-free, free range, and pasture-raised.
Pasture-raised is significantly better than the other two, if it fits your budget. The other two still allow for the chickens to live their entire lives inside a warehouse and never touch grass.
There’s only one brand in my area that manages to make such backyard eggs reliably, and a dozen is $7.99 at the grocery store. Totally worth it since some neighborhoods and cities ban backyard chicken coops.
We had to work with the city council and do a bunch of our own research and battle blue hairs to be able to have backyard chickens.. in a town with 16,000 population … in Iowa…
