Kundalini, Cristos Oil, Hermeticism, Kabbalah all tap into these concepts. I wouldn’t discount the DMT aspect though, several books on astral projection that predate Monroe credit the pineal gland as a key. I would bet sats that the gateway process triggers DMT and that it's the key to separating consciousness from the physical body. My most significant DMT experience was the exact near-death experience you described, an engulfing white light; all love and all pain all at once; Christ; then being pulled back.
