There is an API. Nostur has it implemented. Damus, Primal, and Amethyst will add support in the future. Snort and Iris has support to join and listen now, but not create.

Great news! Been out of the loop in Nostr for a lot of 2024 so thanks for catching me up :)
Hey Derek, Does nostur allow for media to be sent over private message? Damus and primal dont give the option to add media in a private message. Just asking for someone else as i dont have an apple product to test different apps on.
