Ahmad al-Sharaa, the current president of Syria, said that in November 2024, when he began advancing on the positions of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, he received a message from Putin telling him to stop in Aleppo and go no further, or else “the situation would worsen.” Al-Sharaa ignored the warning, advanced, overthrew Assad, and now governs Syria. Putin still maintains control over the two bases Russia holds in the country, but Russian soldiers are not allowed to leave the perimeter of those bases “for security reasons.”
