It's true. The initial block download can take days longer on an HDD, however, that's just an upfront cost to pay, after which, it will be absolutely fine as a node. You can even install an electrum server and a mempool/block explorer on top of it. As a personal lightning node, it'll be fine, too.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this but, you don’t need to have an SSD drive for you #bitcoin node. A standard HHD will do just fine. Bitcoin is bulky and slow an does not require a speedy storage drive. Maybe an SSD can help speed up the download process but that is more limited by your bandwidth than your hard drive I think. So save your money and get more TB for less $ when it comes to your node, I say.
