I have full control about which exchange to use and whether I do or do not want to trade at a particular price. And the counterparty is free to take my side of the trade or not.

That sounds fair enough to me. And I can choose not to trade stocks as well. I am trying to see where the brutality comes in. I suppose if I made a losing trade I could feel brutalized, is that it? It doesn't sound brutal to me, it's just the way things work. I guess we don't disagree, really.
