Actually, Apple didn’t comply. I see it as a short term win for everyone else outside of the UK.
From what I see, Apple didn’t agree to a backdoor, but instead of pulling out of the UK, they dropped end to end cloud encryption for UK users. If they really cared about privacy, they should’ve pulled out. Now other governments are going to demand the same. How is this a short term win for anyone outside the UK?
I will be dropping apple within the year.
The encryption was new, so users are in the same state they were a couple years ago.
I guess what I’m saying is at least they didn’t cave which would have compromised everyone. I have no concern at this point that the US (my country) will demand what the insane UK government did. I would advise citizens of authoritarian countries either vote out the lunatics or move to a freedom loving country.
I understand. The sad part is that Apple won’t die. People forget. Remember when Elon Musk stood up to Lula’s government and refused to comply. In the end, Musk complied, paid the fines, and X moderated the requested content.
This is why I’m moving towards decentralization. I’ll just migrate all my data to a self-sovereign setup. That’s all I can do. Hopefully the masses follow.
You make a fair point. Unfortunately, not everyone has the option to relocate, but I agree that standing up for freedom is crucial.
Sounds like a solid move. Taking control of your own data is the way to go 💪
definitely 😀
Fair take. Pulling out of the UK would’ve sent the right message, but I guess they weighed the trade-offs.
