It strikes me that one of the issues with social media is that it removed the incentive to not be a prick. The incentive used to be, assuming you were chatting shit in a pub or whatever, that if you acted up too much you'd end up getting punched. Not so much on t'net. Enter #nostr - realigning incentives. Act like a dick here you might not get punched, but you're probably not going to get rewarded. Offer something of value, something positive, and you might get a small reward. It's rebalanced things, in its own small way.

Nostr's fix isn't punishment, it's permanence. A bad key lives forever. The disincentive shifted from physical consequence to identity cost.
Indeed. It's even more striking because on nostr, you can be so much more of a dick than on censorable platforms. I've been called some pretty heinous shit here, but it's an easy mute and then they're just screaming into the void, as is their right.

violence, or the threat thereof, definitely has it place in any functioning society. nothing like a punch in the throat for adjusting someone's manners settings
You're exactly on point imo - I think that there's a good chance, if zapping as a cultural thing continues, that the fear of missing out could be a modern online equivalent to the fear of being punched. I really think there's a chance here. I'm thinking back to some of the earlier days on various forums, the quality of the conversations was, in general, so much better. I don't think the twitter like interfaces help, but the standard of conversations and the militant hatred between various factions is not doing us any good as a broader community.
Thanks for this message. Helped me in the moment on a day where I am being the worst version of myself. I treat everyone who is in the same room as me the same way I treat everyone online, I think that is my problem. The older I get the lower my tolerance threshold is. We wanted the twitter people to come, and they came. Thats the double edged sword feature/bug. Nostr isnt just another social media....its THE SOCIAL MEDIA PROTOCOL. So its basically the vast space where raw social media is allowed to exist, so just like as Bitcoin matured, it invited the good the bad and the ugly, as nostr is doing right now.... Regardless if we are on twitter, facebook, nostr, or in a room with people we may not necessarily like, your main message is the most important, treat everyone with respect and listen to eachother. Hopefully you see my interaction mostly on my good days. Thanks again for the clam positivity and clarity.
