In 2016, in a Cincinnati courtroom, 23-year-old Jaleel Smith-Riley wept as he was sentenced to life without parole for the 2013 m*rder of 22-year-old Porshia Brooks during a botched robbery in Norwood, Ohio.
He had asked to change his plea and expressed remorse, but Judge Barry Kubicki denied the request, citing the crime’s severity.
At sentencing, Brooks’ mother held her daughter’s ashes, while her sister called the punishment just, a reflection of the family’s grief.
