Are the risks to cold storage real as it seems in the U.S or will the Bitcoin and privacy advocates defeat the push to take away our privacy? I'm uneasy with the idea of taking some of my Bitcoin of exchange when stuff like the patriot act in regards to Bitcoin and private/anonymous transactions are facing such hard times right now. The script has flipped recently when I thought we were headed towards better regulations regarding privacy.

If you are scared to keep bitcoin under your own control because of these “threats” then you need to sell all of your bitcoin right now. This is exactly what they want. You will either succumb or succeed. It’s up to you but understand, there will be a cost associated with standing for what you believe in. There always was, there always is, and there always will be. Bravery is a thing. You either have it or you don’t. You choose.

You didn't miss anything, his and my comments were a coincidence in timing but I myself am fishing for encouragement from my fellow bitcoiners, not discouragement. I'm kind of new to self custody and am considering buying a cold card.

I'm the works towards putting the majority of my stack on a cold card and locking it down like fort knox (without the internal thieves of course) but the recent craziness is pissing me off so much is all.

These will all help you out. If you're worried though just compartmentalize and have your taxable/seizable stack and have others. The amount of resources on nostr alone to help with mindset and action is pretty amazing though

Until you take possession & responsibility for your bitcoin, you'll never understand the gift that Bitcoin is. What are you worried about? It's far harder to rescue bitcoin from an exchange than it is to send it back or exchange it for fiat. Your fears keep you suppressed & controllable. Let it all go ❤️

Exchanges were just too convenient and never gave me trouble for too long but I smell trouble in the air, so I'm taking what I have on exchange off, regardless of the perceived pressure. I'll just have to lose my keys in a boating accident afterwards.

Removing 3rd party exposure risk is going to be super important soon I think. It's one of Bitcoin's best features. Boating accidents mean your bitcoin should never move ever again. If someone were to steal your bitcoin however, then future movements would prove nothing.

I've been working on a bitcoin course. The first section will begin with 1942 to give an example of a closed society. FDR signed executive order 6102 in 1933, making it illegal for Americans to own gols. By 1942, he imprisoned people for no other reason than their identity. Executive Order 9066 required people of Japanese decent to reprort to internment camps. The surviving Japanese people were awarded reperations in the 1980’s, but it was againat the law for them to own gold. Imagine if the Japanese interned could have kept "illegal gold" as 12 memorized words. The quest for electronic cash was an attempt to circumvent unjust laws written by totalatarian governments. "Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age." Only 100% provable full-reserve, self-custudy solves the double-spending problem. "Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benifits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double spending. We propose a solution to the double spending problem." Satoshi Nakamoto Bitcoin: A Peer To Peer Electronic Cash System In my opinion, that's why self custody is important.

How much money is freedom worth for you? You could take that amount off the exchange and risk not being able to spend it. However include the other risk in that calculation: having bitcoin IOU:s instead of bitcoin (i.e. having it on the exchange) poses a risk of neither getting bitcoin nor fiat from it, if the exchange rug pulls/gets hacked/is ordered by the government. Main point: you don't have to keep everything in the same place, you can divide it according to your own perception of type and severity of risk.
