I thought I was spending a lot of money on AI to help me build DNN when I could've used free AI models.
I used a bunch of those free ones.
Nope, I did not waste my money. Paid AI is so much better than free AI.
Paid AI was a headache to reach where I reached, free AI was 10x more of a headache x3
So ended with "Nope, I definitely didn't waste money on this" x3

Certainly your analogy on this applies on the O.S.s too
Free AI LMLs can be bothersome for some stuff unfortunately, especially coding
I do think we'll get there in a couple of years, certainly not from Big Tech though
Oh ya, what I'm using right now will probably be a 'free version' probably in the next 2-5 years.
And then the paid one will most likely be much less of a headache than it is right now (as in to the point of barely any bugs to fix, with even more efficient code).
kinda.
OSs are really mature at this point, and we're reaching points where even paid ones are just going down hill with free ones going up hill.
If I had to guess, the niceness levels of Linux will continue to rise, resulting in a continue rise of adoption from 3% (right now, which was 1.something last year) to 20% probably by 2030 to 2050, increasing at an increasing rate where we'd hit 30% to 50% of the market by 2030 to 2080 (again, i'm just guessing here).
