I never trusted it.

It was already hard enough to move people from WhatsApp to Signal (and most just do both) and now we must start all over again? Does it really matter if everything is open source? If something is done wrong it must be highlighted by someone, anyone. Otherwise what are the options? SimpleX? Threema? Briar?
