The one I'd recommend is having one. Even the absolute cheapest ones work well! Heltec v3 is very common and cheap. Hardest part is flashing the firmware to update, but even that's not hard.

I just got my first meshtasric device this week. At first glance I’m not seeing any nodes, but recognize location in these node names and hope to connect to them soon! We must be in a similar region.
