"Is offending others a necessary part of free speech?" I have to argue the underlying premise. Being "offended" is not the inherent responsibility of the speaker. Rather, it rests solely in the lap of the offended.
Pretty much goes hand in hand with expectations. And you know what they say about those who "assume" ๐
