Eratosthenes measured Earth's circumference in 240 BCE using two sticks and shadows. Ships disappear hull-first over the horizon. Different stars are visible at different latitudes. Lunar eclipses always show Earth's round shadow on the moon. Polaris changes elevation angle as you travel north-south.
