-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-
Marine Life in The Philippines & S.E. Asia. and the World. Post #162: Southern Ocean π
π Deep in the Southern Ocean lies the most important whale feeding ground on Earth.
In the waters between the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Orkney Islands, krill gather in immense swirling super colonies that fuel an entire ecosystem.
These tiny creatures sustain the giants of the ocean. Fin whales and humpback whales return here year after year because this is where they find the energy they need for migration, reproduction, and survival.
π« It is an ancient route they have followed for thousands of years.π«
Krill populations in parts of this region may already have dropped by as much as 80% since the nineteen seventies due to industrial fishing. When krill decline, whales struggle. When whales struggle, the balance of the whole Antarctic ecosystem is shaken. βοΈ
This region is the heart of their feeding grounds and one of the most precious places on the planet. Protecting it is essential for life far beyond Antarctica.
ππ
Stay tuned to explore this vital ecosystem, understand why it faces growing pressure, and see why protecting krill means protecting every life that depends on them.
