Does Damus support custom reactions like that, or do I have to now start from scratch asking them for support for yet another feature they’ll tell me is unnecessary and unimportant because “muh Notedeck”?

It's just a regular url. They should be able to display it.
We support custom reactions and also. @Derek Ross and I are going to start a pod soon. Maybe you could come on first to voice your complaints 💜
