In regards to cashu specifically, it requires a lightning node in order to run a cashu mint in the first place. It is not less complicated, but is a more private way for users to transact within the same mint. Payments between mints are made via regular lighting payments, so it would be pointless for every user to run their own mint. Think of cashu as a more private form of custodial lightning, because unless you are the mint operator you are entrusting someone else with your bitcoin.

Yes, that's the same line I've got from the people who actually know what they're talking about: "It's an improvement on custodial lightning for privacy and ease of access." We don't need better custodial lightning, though. We need more people to have access to non-custodial lightning. Simple as.
I wouldn't completely discount ecash. The privacy thing you know about, but I think it is a big deal for those that value it. The second thing is that ecash token can bridge network mediums. I can give you a token via radio, qr, cassette, etc... But you are ultimately correct in that the lightning network require nodes. Nodes are decentralized subway stations and node operators build their tunnels to their liking. You need access to the subway though. And there will always be just 2 choices. Use your own station, or someone else's. You should really listen to that episode I did, it just came out and it's long so I understand. But I really had you in mind with some of the questions I was asking Juraj.
