That is certainly not how they sold it.
i thought private, local ai was the point of apple intelligence
It uses a combination of on device models and bigger cloud models. It tries to detect when you’ll need a cloud one, but clearly that isn’t working well.
yeah i just asked it to check my email which should be local, so i don't get it
