We can change the difficulty adjustment. We just have to survive long enough for the next difficulty adjustment, and the proof of work survives sudden heavy mining.
I can build models that show the adjustment regime works and handles a 1000x hashpower rise and then also a drop of tye same size and the rest is just actually making the hard fork. I already designed several of these algorithms before because i was being paid to save a coin from a broken DAA.

if you are curious about what i'm talking about, i made a note today about a draft design for a hard fork that eliminates taproot, binds to the shared mempool, has a two pronged difficulty adjustment regime that enables the chain to survive both big increases and decreases of hashpower. i'm working on the finer details and implementing it. it will be a new type of testnet identifier, and will require actual mining on it to progress. i will run a miner on my VPS with the instance alongside it, and for now it will just be a testnet, in that, the real activation will reset back to sync with the main chain and then start the new protocol at flag day. the idea is to get people to stress test it, find out what conditions it doesn't cope with, it's designed to handle both the big hash power changes and also eliminate checkpoints and replace them with a robust, in-protocol checkpointing system that stops big miners from minting a sidebranch and then overtaking and breaking the history, censorship attack.
lots of little details but i have tested already in past work most of the elements of the DAA that i am proposing. and it will enable bulletproofs, also. which means we can give the middle finger to the moneros "you want private transactions, now you don't need monero" and the idea is that because it can survive any attack, and because it will enable the use of a lot of idle old hashpower people have laying around in their garages, it improves ux for lightning, enables lightning and ark schnorr signatures, and deletes taproot.
it will be awesome. and i expect that coretards will be mad as hell and think it's not serious, and then start to get mad and attack it, and it won't break, and then eventually big miners start to see it has value as we build shapeshift style atomic swaps against spamchain and people can sell bitcoins and enable a price discovery process.
