Thankfully we're past an inflection point. They can absolutely make it more controlled for the masses, but remember the "internet" as commonly known is just ~10% of the actual internet thanks to the highly centralised nature. Accessibility points for the remaining 90% have been planted and are becoming increasingly common thanks to protocols like Meshtastic etc and to an extent even the recent Bitchat with messaging over Bluetooth. You can't properly police protocols. Facebook, Youtube, they're not protocols, so they can and will be policed. I think we'll begin to see more and more big platforms and content creators decentralise and make their own pockets in the internet (something we've started seeing with a lot of content creators) and by carving out their own space om the internet, they'll much more easily not be prone to censorship etc
