I think we are poisoned with our reality that govt is pretty awful and thus the less time people are there the better. But for salvodorians their govt has been 10x worse and now they have someone they believe makes them and their country better by every measurable metric. So it’s pretty fucking elistist (nay I say privileged) to impose our ideology and biases towards govt on them.

Can’t say I disagree with any of that. Western regime changes obviously haven’t worked out for the average human around the world. And while every government is worth criticism given the nature that all governments are legalized monopolies of coercion, Bukele is one of the last I would care to criticize given that he’s made El Salvador a freer and more open market than before. On its face this story would seem like El Salvador is moving towards making Bukele a monarch, but reality tells us they’re actually doubling down on freedom and rejecting past failure. Just like if a CEO makes a company record profits, you would like to see that CEO remain in his position rather than fire him after 4 years and hire someone who might tank the company.
