I had to yell five times at one of those phone bots that I wanted to talk to a real person before it transferred me. Will this get better or worse as AI continues to progress?

It'll keep getting harder to figure out if it is a bot or a very stupid person.

It will get worse. The goal is for the AI chatbots to emulate humans 1:1.
I run an IT Service Desk that had an AI mandate to do this very thing but the customer ripped cord because people complained about not being able to speak to humans. The tooling is still immature but in the coming years, I fully believe you'll have no idea if you're speaking to a human or not. We used Google CCAI for our proof of concept.
